What Are Keywords And How To Find The Best Ones For YOUR Business...

Keywords, in the context of the internet and internet marketing, is a phrase, alphanumerical term or word that sums up the topic of a web document such as a website.

However, they are looked at differently by different people depending on how you are using the net. There are basically three different aspects or perspectives:

1. Search Engines
2. Web users
3. Web Masters, and marketers

How Search Engines Work...

Search engines are like e-libraries. But instead of books, they store and retrieve web pages and websites for the web users or searchers (Their customers) and for webmasters and marketers who write articles, blogs, ezines, etc.

They also maintain an index of search terms. These words or phrases are what the engines use to determine the topic of a page or document.

Indefinite articles (a, the) were, at one time, not included in any search terms indexed by the engines. Over time the engines realized that these words were needed for what is now known as, "Long-Tail," so they are now included for more focused searches.

What Words Are Your Customers Using?

Your customers are on the net for one basic thing... information. Even if it's just to see the latest FaceBook post, most people are on the net for information and solutions. So from their standpoint, the web user uses words to clue the search engines in on what's on their mind. Many use these words unconsciously.

Web users have come to expect high quality, focused SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages) when they execute a search. They do not want duplicate content (Pages and pages of identical sites, only differing in the name of the person representing the site - these are usually MLM or Affiliate sites which are replicated by the company they represent).

Your customers do not want search engines to return blogs for the most part. If you were looking for information on a particular travel destination, a blog might have that information buried too long ago to be found easily. Websites that provide topical content are much more preferred by the engines.

It is vital that you know what keywords are being typed into search engines by customers looking to buy what you offer.

Keyword Tools...

It is nearly impossible to succeed at generating sufficient quantity and quality of website traffic without a good keyword research tool.

A good research tool should give you access to a regularly updated database of millions of actual searches people made at search engines.

You should also make sure that the information is filtered to remove those caused by robots.

It is very important that your research discovers the level of competition for a given word. Too many well established and huge sites, some of which are household names, and you'll spend years trying to get top search engine rankings for that word... if you get there at all!

Not enough competition could mean that there are too few searches for that word to make it worth anybody's time.
