Choosing Keywords That Generate "Targeted" Traffic To Your Website
Choosing keywords cannot be left to chance. Many websites begin a slow death at this point. Doomed even before the first page is built.Free targeted traffic from the top search engines is your reward for choosing keywords that drive targeted traffic that is already interested and looking for information about what you can offer.
What Are Keywords?
Keywords are looked at a little differently depending on where you are coming from. You, most likely, are looking at things from the viewpoint of a marketer. When you think about choosing keywords you're thinking about (or should be thinking about) your site's theme or concept which is always based on a specific keyword. Or, you could be thinking about the individual pages in your site which are each based on a topic related to your site's theme and a specific keyword is focused on as that topic for each page. All other words on each page that are not the keyword is known as content. So choosing keywords is a simple matter of picking out the most searched keywords, right? Actually, not really as you''l see below... Sites that are built around a theme and a specific keyword and have pages each focused on a specific keyword which are related to the main theme are called "theme based content sites." Theme based content sites which are structured properly are preferred by the search engines and their spider software. It makes it much easier to index sites when they are content rich and keyword focused. Another viewpoint to keep in mind when choosing keywords for your site concept and it's KFCP's (Keyword Focused Content Pages)is the viewpoint of the internet surfer or searcher. When someone wants information from a search engine they must first think about how to word their request in order to get the results they're after. To the searcher, keywords are what tell the search engines exactly what they want. Remember, the searcher is looking for information. When she finds your site as a result of her own efforts (or so she thinks) she feels smarter and in control.
Why The Most Searched Keywords Are Not Always The Best...
I think it's logical to conclude that the best keywords to focus on are the most searched keywords. If you really think about it though, if it were that simple, driving traffic would be easy and there probably wouldn't be any money in internet marketing. Typically, the words that are searched the most are more general, less focused and highly competitive. Take the word,"money," for example. Type the word, "money," into a search engine. Near the top of the page you'll see a number representing the number of times this keyword occurs in their database. For "money" it's some crazy number like 922 million. That's a lot of competition trying to get to the top ten search results. Notice the results on the right side of the page. Those are the PPC ads. You can bet these folks are paying a pretty penny to appear there for this word. The results down the middle or left side are known as the "organic" results or "natural" results. Those folks don't have to pay anything to appear there! They just had to have the best keyword focused content. But look who is there. CNN. AOL. Some of the biggest corporate names in America. These are the type of companies you would be competing for to get ranked on Google's first page results for the keyword money. Bottom line... The most searched words are also the most sought after by the big boys. Now, try typing in the word, "money from auctions." Notice a difference in the number of results? There's much less competition for this keyword (which is actually a phrase but is still considered "a" keyword) meaning you have a much higher chance of getting your page ranked high enough to generate some serious traffic.
